The Gujarat government said more than 4.5 lakh people were placed in private firms through the employment exchanges during the last two years

GANDHINAGAR: About 3,64,000 educated and ‘semi-educated’ people are registered with various employment exchanges across the state, Gujarat labour minister Dilipkumar Thakur told the assembly on Wednesday in written responses to questions by opposition legislators.

The total number of unemployed people registered with the exchanges are 3,64,252 including 3,46,436 who are educated. The remaining 17,816 are ‘semi-educated’, he said. The minister did not elaborate on the classification.

The minister stated that 1,278 people got government jobs and 4.53 lakh people were placed in private entities through employment exchanges in 2020 and 2021.

These figures do not reflect people who were recruited by government bodies without involving the employment exchanges, he clarified.

The Gujarat Congress later cited the figures to attack the BJP government. The BJP promises big on jobs but when it comes to implementation, they fail big time, said Gujarat Congress working president Hardik Patel and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani at a media conference. They claimed that the government has failed to fill vacancies for 4.5 to 5 lakh jobs and announced plans to spotlight the issue at a party convention on March 28

“The government has no plan to provide employment in the coming days… The Youth Congress will convene a convention in Gandhinagar on the issue of unemployment and the irregularities in government jobs, including the number of incidents of exam paper leak for recruitment to government jobs,” Patel said in his address to the media.

There are about 5 lakh unemployed youth registered with employment exchanges, said MLA Mevani. He said the Congress will fight for the over 30 lakh unregistered educated unemployed.
