Local organizations plan to host a “different kind of job fair” in Port Huron Wednesday, Bruce Seymore II of the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County said.
Instead of a traditional job fair with lots of companies, the EDA and Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! have put together a “mini” job fair, based off job fairs in Genesee County and the Thumb region, featuring eight Port Huron companies with immediate hiring needs.
“We thought we’d bring it here and see how it works,” Seymore, EDA vice president of business services, said.
The job fair will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Harvey Reinvestment Center at 3013 24th St. in Port Huron.
According to the EDA, the participating businesses and the positions they’re looking to fill are:

Seymore said job seekers should bring resumes and be prepared for onsite interviews as some businesses may hire people on the spot.
The companies were invited to participate in the event and represent various industries, providing job seekers with different options for their career choice.
Federal unemployment subsidies will end this month and the EDA and Michigan Works! anticipate seeing an increase in job seekers. This is an opportunity to show people there is a wide array of job opportunities right in their backyard, Seymore said.
He said the organizations are planning a Marysville job fair and if these two fairs are successful they will replicate them, with companies hopefully getting good candidates they want to make offers to.
“That’ll be considered a success,” he said.

Steve Fernandez, who owns Country Style Marketplace in Fort Gratiot Township with wife Michele Jones, has a lot of jobs he’s hoping to fill in the next couple weeks.
He and his wife hope to open boutique grocery store PH Country Style Market in downtown Port Huron this fall and aim to have 38 full-time and 20 part-time employees.
“We hope that’s enough people to open the store with,” Fernandez said.
And he hopes to hire people at upcoming job fairs, including Wednesday. He said this job fair could have a better response than traditional ones because it’s small and focused.
The company will be looking for “A” players who want a great place to work and if someone doesn’t have a mindset for working with people, “it’s probably not the place to apply for,” he said.
The business will be screening for the best candidates Wednesday and if they can get get 15 to 20 employees from the job fair, “I’m going to be very happy,” Fernandez said.
