Having just sold her house in West London, Mia decided to take early retirement and was hoping for a permanent move to the countryside around Alicante, Spain. Helping Mia with the search was her mother Valerie, who also planned to visit regularly. With a budget of £170,000, Laura Hamilton had plenty of options lined up on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun. But one property saw Mia refusing to take the tour any further as she commented that the house “isn’t me”.

The fifth property was a five-bed apartment in Hondon De Los Frailes.

It was a large detached villa with breathtaking views and within easy walking distance to the village.

It also included a separate holiday apartment on the first floor with a double bedroom, living room, shower room, kitchenette and large private roof terrace.

The house was valued at £173,870 at the time of filming, but Mia seemed to take an instant disliking to it.

After exploring a few of the rooms, she said to Valerie: “I’m not going upstairs.”

Her mother agreed that the house didn’t feel right.

“There’s no point,” Mia explained. “It isn’t for me.”

Laura was surprised to hear of the feedback after being sure the mother and daughter would enjoy what the property had to offer.

The house hunter told the presenter: “It has a gorgeous garden and fantastic views, but no, it’s not for us.”

The property Mia had her eye firmly fixed on was property three, a cave house in Hondon Del Las Nievas.

It boasted five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large pool, several outbuildings and was on a plot of almost 3 acres.

Laura explained how, conveniently, a local farmer who owns the next door property takes care of the land and crops.

It was valued at £195,652, and Laura instantly fell in love with the space.

“It’s got a secret inside,” Laura explained as she showed Mia the cave part of the home.

Mia became emotional as she expressed how much she loved the house and could see herself and her dog snuggling up together in the cave section.

She decided to put in an offer. Initially, her suggestion of £161,000 was rejected by the owner.

“It’s 165,000 I’ll go back with and then that’s it,” she told a nervous Laura.

Luckily though, the owner accepted the offer, and Mia was excited to move into her sunny property in Spain.

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4.
