oris Johnson has warned Tory rebels who plan to defy the Government tomorrow by voting down Plan B measures that there is “no room for complacency”.
The votes tomorrow present the first of two key tests to Mr Johnson’s authority, with a by-election in the traditional Tory safe seat of North Shropshire to follow on Thursday.
As the first death in the UK with the omicron variant was confirmed, Mr Johnson also refused to rule out further restrictions for Christmas in comments that will only further discomfort his own backbenchers, some of whom are uncomfortable with the scope of what has already been introduced.
Meanwhile, Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, confirmed that “of course there is a distinction” between all eligible adults being offered a booster by the end of the year and actually receiving one, suggesting some people may not get one by the end of January.
It came as he also announced that three doses would be needed for Covid certification for large events rather than the current double vaccination requirement at some point in the new year.
As newly-eligible Britons queued for up to five hours to receive their third dose, Mr Johnson will hope the Government’s ambitious target can be met, and the damage done by the omicron variant mitigated. But tomorrow he will have to brace for a rebellion of at least 75 of his backbenchers, leaving him reliant on Labour votes to tackle the virus as he would like.
