Bridgwater’s annual carnival show is set to return to the town at the end of March after a two-year gap.

The performance, known as The Old Folks Show, features Bridgwater carnival clubs and will take place at Bridgwater Town Hall between Thursday 24 March and Saturday 26 March 2022.

Show organiser Wayne Anker said: “I’m sure I am speaking for everyone involved when I say how pleased and excited we are to be putting on an Old Folks Show in 2022.

“Like many events throughout the UK, Covid restrictions meant we could not stage a show in 2020 and 2021, and I am absolutely delighted for the town’s over 60s in being able to entertain them once again.”

Having first begun in 1962, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the event which has proven highly popular in the town.

During the three-night performances, groups associated will take to the stage to put on a show a ‘less-serious but highly entertaining’ stage version of the carnival which is held in October.

Mr Anker added: “The show is really good fun for everyone involved and it’s a chance for us all to relax and get into the carnival spirit”, added Wayne. “As well as providing new carnival club members with some stage experience without the competitive pressure of being judged, it is also a very enjoyable and social event for us all.”

Tickets for the show are free and are available from the carnival centre, High Street, Bridgwater on Saturday 26 February between 10am and 12 noon. Thereafter any remaining tickets will be available from the carnival centre during normal opening hours.

Bridgwater Carnival itself is also set to return later this year, with the event taking place on Bonfire Night (November 5).

It is the UK’s oldest carnival and one of the largest illuminated carnival processions in Europe – with a brand new website launched ahead of its return.

The new site contains many other features including an enhanced online shop which allows carnival supporters to purchase official merchandise, a dynamic display of Bridgwater Carnival’s latest Twitter posts, and an advanced Google map overlay showing specific points of interest.

Dave Stokes, the carnival’s publicity director said: “Our website plays an essential role in promoting our carnival to a national and worldwide audience, and on behalf of the carnival committee I would like to thank Somerset Web Services for their support, help and sponsorship in bringing this project to a successful conclusion.”
