1. Bristol’s housing crisis

The housing crisis in the UK has been well documented, and successive national governments have poured millions into housebuilding trying to solve the problem.

In Bristol, where there is a need for more than 30,000 new homes, prospective renters are struggling to find a place to live.

On the property website Spareroom, there are currently 2,381 “room wanted” adverts from people in Bristol, but there are only 308 “room available” listings.

2. Clifton cyclist tributes

Floral tributes have appeared near the scene of a fatal collision in Bristol in which a woman in her 20s lost her life.

The flowers have been placed under a road sign in Clifton in an act of remembrance for the cyclist who died in a collision involving an HGV at around 8.50am yesterday (Wednesday, September 22).

Investigations will continue today (Thursday) into the incident in Priory Road which closed roads after emergency services were called to the scene.

3. Street unites after controversy

Traders and faith groups in Easton are staging a day of action to unite the community for a common cause.

Events will be taking place along St Marks Road today (Thursday, September 23) to raise awareness and explore community-led solutions to address the global climate crisis.

It is hoped that the initiative will help to build a “bridge to bring the community back together” following controversy about pedestrianisation along the street last year, which split opinion.

4. Pub for sale

A Bristol pub run by the same family for almost 25 years has been put on the market.

The Mechanics Arms on Clouds Hill Road, St George, is a popular community pub with a loyal local clientele attracted by the pool table, darts and beer garden.

A Victorian-built pub in a residential area, it’s close to St George’s Park and local shops.

5. Station shock

There are lots of things the very clever Richard Osman knows – how to create and present long-running quiz shows and pen hugely successful crime novels to name but two.

But there are some things that can still blow his mind – and that includes why Bristol Temple Meads doesn’t have an M&S.

The Pointless and House of Games star was in the city to promote his new novel – The Man Who Died Twice – which was released this month.

6. Filthy chicken

Breast, leg, thigh, wings, skin and even gizzards – you could say new Bristol opening Ji is serving every bit of the chicken except the squawk.

This Taiwanese fried chicken business started in London’s Chinatown and arrived in Bristol this week.

The company was founded in 2018 by Roger Jen, who was simply missing his traditional fried chicken back home in Taiwan.
