Chennai: The central crime branch (CCB) has arrested three including a couple for allegedly duping multiple people on the pretext of providing jobs in Chennai Port Trust (CPT). According to the report, one of the suspects (V Suresh) had impersonated himself as a Port Trust official.

A complaint was launched by a retired official of a truck manufacturing firm in Ennore. In his complaint to the police, Venkateshwaran alleged that he lost Rs 54 lakh trying to get his son employed in Chennai Port Trust.

Police said that between 2018 to January 2021, Venkateshwaran had paid the accused Rs 54 lakh in installments. In order to get a junior executive officer post in Chennai Port Trust for his son,  the retired man invested such a hefty amount.

As per the claims made by the victim, the main accused (SG Swadeeswaran) and his wife (S Yamini) had claimed that they were acquainted with several seniors of the CPT department. They assured him of securing a seat and in return Venkateshwaran paid the amount demanded by the main accused pretending to be a port trust official.

In order to be perceived as authentic, the accused shared the names of a port trust board member, traffic section official, cargo section official, and claimed that they are acquainted with them. Without knowing their bad intentions, the retired man trusted them and lost Rs 54 lakh.

While reacting to the incident, a senior police officer said, “Further investigations are on to ascertain if any others are involved in this recruitment scam,” as saying was quoted by the Times of India.

Meanwhile, after repeated requests Venkatesh realised that he is not going to avail junior executive officer post in Chennai Port Trust for his son, he started asking him to return the money. Despite several attempts, when the accused failed to return, he lodged a complaint with the city police commissioner’s office.

The report further suggests that suspects were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
