The City of Tulsa is looking to hire pool managers, lifeguards, pool cashiers, and camp counselors for the summer.

Some of the jobs pay up to $13 an hour. Before the pools fill up with kids, they’ll need to hire lifeguards to be on duty first.

“We have our staff going to job fairs working with the swim clubs, the schools that have swim clubs that’s a great source for us to get kids who are you know avid swimmers, good lifeguard candidates,” said Anna America.

America said it’s been challenging to hire employees for the summer in the past. In 2020, the pools shut down because of the pandemic, and last summer the city struggled to hire enough lifeguards, forcing them to cut down on the hours the pools were open.

“You couldn’t go into schools. Normally you know we start now we’re doing our recruiting. You couldn’t do job fairs, no one was having job fairs last year. Nobody could go into those schools and work with those swim clubs,” said America.

She said the hourly pay increased last summer for season employees, which also includes camp counselors.

“Obviously, they do things like the zoo they go swimming a lot, go to splash pads, go to different parks. We’re really trying to take advantage of some of the great amenities we have. So like getting out to Oxley nature center,” said America.

The city offers lots of summer activities, from field trips to the city pools.

”For some of these kids, it’ll be the first time ever that they’re going to get to go do the normal stuff that we took for granted you know. Go on field trips and play with each other and not have on masks and not worry about something. So I think there is a lot of pent-up demand in the community,” said America.

Along with the 50 seasonal positions, the city is also looking to hire 200 people to fill the openings they have right now. For more information about the seasonal and full-time positions CLICK HERE
