Homes can be very cluttered at times, so it may be difficult to know where to even begin. Even knowing when to start can bring on overwhelming feelings. Whether it’s organising wardrobes or stacking hefty pans in kitchen cupboards that will quite literally ensure never having to hear clanking in the household again, there is a hack for every part of your home that could use some tidying up.

Lizzie Grant, professional organiser and founder of Declutter on Demand has shared top tips to declutter “quickly” and “easily”.

She explained how Britons need to focus on exactly what they want to achieve by decluttering.

Lizzie said: “For example, if you’re decluttering due to an upcoming move, focus on getting rid of everything you don’t want to pack up, move, and deal with later. If you’ve got guests coming to stay, your focus will be on decluttering the spaces they will be staying in and using.

“If you’re running out of space, then you’ll want to concentrate on decluttering drawers, cupboards and storage areas to make more space so the stuff on your surfaces can be put away.

“If you want to declutter quickly, it needs to be focused!”

“Alternatively, it could be as simple as your favourite meal or a hot bubble bath. Pick whatever will motivate you the most.”

Once motivated to declutter, Lizzie explained how to “tackle easier items first”.

She said: “If you want to declutter quickly and easily, then save decluttering your paperwork and sentimental items for another time. These are the two categories which tend to take the longest.

“Instead declutter items which you find easier to make decisions about.

“Also, look for ‘big ticket’ items which are cluttering your space and are easy wins. This may be furniture or ornaments – things that are visually cluttering up your space.”

A timer can be used to speed up the decluttering process.

Lizzie said: “Set the timer for 15 minutes at a time. Starting at the room entrance, carry a bin bag and collect anything broken or that’s just rubbish.

“Next, work around the room again with a ‘donate’ box/bag. Then again with a ‘relocate’ box / bag.

“Reset the timer as many times as necessary and play upbeat music as it will help you move faster.”

Having clear and simple rules is the way to go when decluttering, according to Lizzie.

She said: “Instead of reinventing the wheel every time you come to make a decision, have a list of simple rules you will follow.

“For example, once something goes into a bin bag or donation box it stays there; or if you don’t love and use it and it can easily be replaced let it go; or all trash and donations must leave the house within 48 hours from the end of each decluttering session.

“This will help you preserve more mental energy to help you get through it and avoid hitting a decluttering wall due to decision fatigue.”
