BROCTON — Village Mayor Art Miller remains concerned about the appearance of various properties within Brocton, which is a concern shared by some local residents.
At a Brocton Village Board meeting this week, Miller and some members of the public raised a few of those concerns in specific. One is the appearance of some houses and buildings throughout the village that are in need of general “sprucing up” in terms of paint and renovations.
Because locals courts have been out of operation for several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Miller was hesitant to begin citing residents who had already been spoken to by code enforcement officer Wendy Spinuzza. Miller said the village can begin issuing fines to people if need be.
“I don’t believe in it but I have to say it,” Miller said, “we should have started fining these people before. … I’ve been working hard to try and get some of this stuff cleaned up. Some of it is done, but it’s not enough.”
Another area of concern is the state of some lawns in the area. Miller said he went around this past weekend, and while it looks better overall, there’s a few homes where the owners have been reluctant to keep their grass maintained.
“It looks better than it has in a long time,” Miller said. “A lot of people are mowing, but you have those same ones where the code officer goes and talks to.”
Miller said that on occasion, he personally has mowed residents’ lawns to keep them maintained, and while those individuals have been thankful, Miller said he’d prefer people maintain their lawns consistently to avoid potentially being fined.
He added that he is working hard to achieve his goals as mayor and while some of them are coming together, he knows there’s still a lot to do to get the village to how he wants it.
