TWO cousins have both been named among Cornwall’s 30 under 30 – the most innovative business people in the county.

The annual 30 under 30 awards aim to shine a spotlight on some of Cornwall’s best young business talent and they’re organised by Business Cornwall magazine in collaboration with the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce.

Machaela O’Brien has found herself named as part of this elite in the Duchy for the second year running in 2021.

Machaela, who lives in Dobwalls, works for the Family Law Company and is based in Plymouth supporting victims of domestic abuse from all around the South West.

As well as working one-to-one with clients she has provided training on domestic abuse to various organisations. Machaela has also written blogs and news articles covering how the law relates to domestic abuse, including contributions to the national publication Today’s Family Lawyer magazine.

The 26 year old has recently completed her level 6 professional higher diploma in law and practice, becoming a trainee legal executive specialising in private law children and domestic abuse cases. She hopes to qualify as a lawyer later this year.

Machaela was really pleased to discover that her cousin, Dean Dark, had also made it onto Cornwall’s 30 under 30 list of winners.

Fitness

Dean is one of Cornwall’s passionate leaders in the fitness industry, said the Business Cornwall judges. In a climate where physical and mental health and wellbeing are recognised as so important, Dean is one of those leading the way in making fitness of all kinds accessible and available to as many people as possible.

Last year, Dean, who’s from Liskeard, became the owner of Dark Performance Gym in Saltash, and managed to increase membership numbers despite the restrictions of the pandemic. Dean, 29, has not stopped there; together with his business partners he’s recently opened another gym in his home town.

Machaela said: “Both Dean and I grew up in the Liskeard area and we are really close, he is basically like my brother. It’s really nice that we have been named in the 30 under 30 alongside each other.”

Meanwhile in Bude, Theo Davey is making a mark on the global stage with software company Pansenic. Having joined the company in August 2018 as the CEO’s assistant, Theo had been promoted to managing director within two years. He’s created a strategic business plan, led organisational restructuring, and builds long term relationships with partners and clients, as well as overseeing the company’s financial performance.

Pansenic’s Hybrid Text Analytics (HTA) engine is relied upon by many leading businesses across the globe to help them make their own decisions better. Brands and organisations working with Pansenic include Samsung, Philips, Boots, Shell, Johnson and Johnson, and the NHS.
