Clowes speaks out

David Clowes says it was “inconceivable” to him that Derby County risked “falling away” as he spoke of his delight at purchasing the club’s stadium as he continues his bid to finalise a takeover.

Clowes Developments confirmed in a statement today that they had successfully completed the purchase of the ground from ex-Rams owner Mel Morris who separated Pride Park from the club in 2018. The deal was completed last Friday.

In what is being regarded as a major breakthrough in Derby’s takeover saga, administrators Quantuma confirmed that talks are ongoing regarding a takeover of the club that would see them exit administration after nine months.

Clowes is understood to be undergoing the owners and directors’ test and in the meantime, Clowes Developments have also issued an interim loan to the club that will enable them to start the season.

Clowes, who is a lifelong Derby supporter, said: “With a deadline looming and the start of the next season getting closer, we needed to do something.

“As a local and established property company, purchasing the stadium seemed the obvious first step. Secondly, as a proud Derby supporter, it was inconceivable to me that the club was at risk of falling away. We’ve worked tirelessly behind the scenes on the stadium purchase and loan agreement to be able to get the club going again in time for the next season.

“Players, staff and fans needed some good news, and we are delighted to play a part in delivering that.”
