Service professions for non-graduates, “of mouth” for CAP-BEP, health for high school graduates … The sectors which employ the most young people vary with the diploma, according to a study by the statistical department of the Ministry of Labor (Dares) published on Wednesday 10 November, which analyzes “occupations which give the greatest place to young adults at the start of their working life “. And the list of these professions “has changed little for ten years”.

In 2018, the five professions with the highest share of “young leavers” studies, all diplomas combined (that is to say people in employment under 35 who have completed their initial studies for one to four years) are: professionals in cultural and sporting action, employees of the ‘hotels and restaurants, computer engineers, salespeople, unskilled handling workers.

Little movement in 10 years

This ranking has changed little in ten years: computer engineers, handling workers and hotel and restaurant employees have gained places to the detriment of cashiers and self-service employees, computer technicians and paramedical professions. .

The Dares makes a distinction according to the level of studies. Non-graduates are more present among unskilled handling workers. Holders of a CAP or BEP are “Seven times more present among butchers, pork butchers and bakers than in all trades” and “five times more often caregivers”. Holders of the baccalaureate or professional certificate are found mainly among professionals in cultural action, employees and supervisors of the hotel and restaurant industry.

Employment is accelerating in certain highly educated sectors despite the crisis

The study notes that “some trades of bac + 2 slide towards recruitment to bac + 3”: nurses, IT, banking and insurance technicians. The nursing diploma, requalified in 2009 from bac + 2 to bac + 3, was in 2007 the first profession for young graduates of bac + 2, it became in 2018 that of bac + 3, notes the Dares.

Young people who have recently graduated from a bac + 5 or more occupy highly qualified professions: engineers, construction managers, legal professionals. Employment in these trades has accelerated “despite the health crisis”: + 12% in 2020 against + 8% in 2019, in particular “among computer engineers and building executives, who are among the most tense professions on the labor market”, according to the Dares.
