Forensics officers are currently at work at a property in Newark this Boxing Day after the death of a woman.

A cordon remains in place and a police forensics tent has been erected over the front of an end-terrace property on Sleaford Road, Newark.

Detective Inspector Nikki Smith, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Our thoughts are with this woman’s family and friends at what we know will be a very difficult time.

“We have been working hard to establish the cause of her death and will be passing a file to the coroner once our investigations are concluded.”

Neighbours said police, fire and ambulances arrived, sirens blaring, between 11am and noon on Christmas Eve and activity has been ongoing at the address ever since.

One near neighbour said the property was a rental and they only recently realised it was occupied when somebody put up Christmas decorations.

“A fire marshal asked where our electric box and we asked what had happened and he said there had been some sort of altercation but couldn’t say more,” said a neighbour.

“A police officer then came by and said there had been a serious incident and asked if we had seen or heard anything the previous night.

“The tent has been up ever since.

“I don’t know the people there and only knew someone was living there because their Christmas decorations went up. They must have only recently moved in.

“It’s a bit scary and I’ve never seen anything like it, just on the television.

“To know that something serious has happened just a few doors down is worrying. You just hope that everyone is OK, particularly at Christmas time.

“It’s also scary not knowing what’s happened and whether we should be worried about anyone hanging around or coming back.”

Another neighbour said: “The first I saw was the police, fire and ambulance arrive between 11am and 12pm on Christmas Eve. I didn’t see or hear anything before that. It’s worrying.”

Local shopkeepers said: “It’s very worrying. Particularly as we don’t know what’s going on. it must be serious though.

“There were five police cars and an ambulance at one point and that tent has been up ever since with forensic officers in white suits going in and out.

“Every customer who comes into the shop has been asking what’s happened and we can’t tell them because we don’t know.

“Nobody seems to know.”
