A former Woolworths store that closed when the chain collapsed in 2008 is set to become a shop again.

The property in Abergele town centre has been empty for a number of years after initially becoming a gym.

But Prince Handcrafted have agreed to take over the lease.

The bespoke furniture firm in Rhyl now plans to open early next year alongside Snowdonia Candle Company.

Owner Adam Thomas, 33, who lives in Abergele, had driven past the building hundreds of times in recent years and is delighted to now be bringing it back to life.

He said: “The company has mainly operated online since launching shortly before the pandemic started.

“In some ways it was a massive help to us because the tables and desks were shipping out during the crisis.

“We had planned to open a store in Rhyl in spring 2020 but it got put back to November and then two weeks later we were in lockdown again.

“This Abergele store will be a workshop, showroom and shop for the company and our other brand, Snowdonia Candle Company, will also be based there.

“I have passed this empty shop for years but it was only when I saw it advertised online that it actually registered that it could work for us.

“We take on the site in January and hope to be open in February.

“We make bespoke furniture from sustainably sourced wood or reclaimed timber and there is a huge market for what we do because people are moving away from pre-pack furniture.

“It will be positive for Abergele town centre and gives us a chance to have a showroom to show people what we do.”
