Gateshead Council is supporting the government’s Made with Care recruitment campaign by encouraging more people in Gateshead to pursue a rewarding career in the social care sector.

The national campaign aims to promote vacancies in the sector as well as showcase the amazing work that carers do, celebrating the way they empower the people they care for to live their most independent and thriving lives.

It will also tackle perceived barriers to taking up care work, emphasising the importance of personal qualities over qualifications, the opportunities for training and career development as well as the availability of flexible working.

In Gateshead, the need for carers is greater than ever before. Over £67 million is spent by the council to support around 2,900 adults with social care needs. This includes older people, people with physical or learning disabilities and people whose mental health impacts their daily lives.

In the last 10 years, Gateshead’s population aged 80 and over has risen by more than 20%, which has led to increased demand for adult services.

Councillor Michael McNestry, cabinet member for adult social care at Gateshead Council, said:

“We’re proud to support the Made with Care recruitment campaign by promoting the fantastic and varied social care opportunities currently on offer in Gateshead.

“What we knew already, but the last two years have shone a light on and magnified, is how important carers are to our Gateshead community.

“By pursuing an exciting career in care where every day is different, you can be part of our vision to enable everyone in Gateshead to thrive by living their most independent life.

“It doesn’t matter if you have no previous experience within the sector – we’re looking for qualities over qualifications. If you’re interested in a career that makes a difference to people’s lives, with opportunities for training and support from an inspirational team, social care could be for you.”
