Fixed Term for 18 months

We need a multi-talented Head of Culture and Creative Industries to ensure culture plays a critical role in the wider recovery of Bristol in the post-pandemic era. This is your chance to shape the renowned cultural output of a truly remarkable city that’s regularly voted one of the best places to live in the UK. What’s more, you’ll be playing a key role in our wider economic and reputational success.

The role

Bristol’s culture is crucial to the prosperity of our residents and comes with a significant reputation. That’s why we’re looking for a visionary leader to build on our culture and creative industries, driving transformation across the board and making the most of our Cultural Investment Programme. As part of the transformation, you’ll also deliver five museums to expand our cultural offering, including M Shed, the Bristol Museums and Art Gallery as well as the City Archives.

As well as this, you’ll be responsible for the commercial and operational success of a unique portfolio of services and significant business-to-business functions, such as the Bottleyard studios and Create Centre. It’s highly varied, challenging work that comes with the opportunity to make your mark on several high-profile areas of council activity.

The person

You’ll have a strong track record in managing and developing cultural services of a similar size and complexity. You’ll have an in-depth knowledge of museums, archives, and arts and creative organisations, and combine this with skills in fundraising, budgeting, and project management.

It’s also important that you have an entrepreneurial, innovative approach to service development and skills in operational management. You should be able to lead and motivate teams and communicate with a wide range of people including senior leaders.

Why Bristol City Council?

We are proud to be a city that is undergoing major change. Working towards communal goals, our people enjoy a uniquely collaborative and forward-thinking environment – and it is here that you will excel. With the support to realise your ambitions, we will encourage you to develop your skills with ongoing professional development opportunities.

You can also be sure of a great work/life balance, enhanced by flexible working options, generous holiday entitlement, and access to our desirable pension scheme. Working from our attractive open-plan offices, and across the venues you are responsible for, every day will present you with new experiences and opportunities. So join us, and do something truly spectacular with your experience and knowledge.

Regularly voted to be one of the best places to live in the UK, Bristol is celebrated as one of the most liveable cities in the country with excellent green credentials, access to open space and cultural amenity. It is one of the country’s economic success stories and has grown faster than any other UK core city with a population of nearly 500,000 people.
