Heavy rain and flooding causes chaos in and around Swindon

Several days of heavy rain has taken its toll on Swindon and the surrounding areas causing flooding chaos.

Several roads were impacted so badly by standing water that they became impassable.

The Adver has already reported that Wanborough Road has been closed between Wanborough Village and Merlin Way due to several areas of flooding making it difficult for vehicles. 

Bushton Road in Royal Wootton Bassett has a large area of rainwater making it a river with at least one witness describing that a 4×4 fell victim to how deceptively deep it was. 

Laura Soule was driving between Blunsdon and Highworth when her friend captured footage of a large body of water there and an abandoned car that couldn’t make it through. 

Jason Gooch was also able to capture some images of heavy flooding on Great Western Way as he drove past in the passenger seat of his car. 

There were many reports that several areas of Wroughton also flooded quite heavily, particularly Swindon Road and Moormead Road with locals there left amazed water didn’t encroach into people’s houses. 

Businesses have also been affected with the West Swindon Asda having to close for a while this morning due to flooding and subsequent electrical safety issues.

The Tesco Extra on Ocotal Way also had to close for a short period of time after a fire alarm went off forcing staff to evacuate. 

It was discovered The fire alarm was set off by rainwater.

Other people have reported that the the vaccination site at Steam was full of ‘dozens of buckets’ to catch water ‘pouring in through the roof’. 

Residential addresses have also reported flooding with the often blighted Ainsworth Road once again filling up with water, leaving homeowners there exasperated. 

Local councillor Curtis Flux released the following statement about this latest flooding incident in the road.

“It’s very disappointing to see the ongoing floods on Ainsworth Road again today. Last week I spoke with several residents on Ainsworth Road and I understand this is something they have had to endure for a long period of time. It’s not only a inconvenience but it’s seriously affecting their property and quality of life. This is totally unacceptable.

“I want to re assure local residents that I am continuing to push to see this issue is resolved at he earliest opportunity. I’m currently awaiting the latest update from Swindon Borough Council and I will keep everyone informed in due course.”

Elsewhere, a path in the Brynyards Country Park, found at the bottom of the hill by the railway bridge has apparently dissolved after the rain, as reported by Liz Milkins

Even sporting events were postponed with Swindon Women’s Football club having to cancel the big game it had planned against Exeter City at the County Ground.
