A HISTORIC Bolton property adjoined to one of the oldest pubs in the country is going up for sale next month.

Last home to Ye Olde Wench and Trinkets, the property at 12 Churchgate is a centuries-old building in the town centre.

It will be up for sale in an online auction next month via Pugh and Company and there is a guide price of £32,000.

The two-storey, grade-II building adjoins the famous Ye Olde Man and Scythe inn, the town’s oldest pub and the fourth oldest in the UK, which dates back to 1251.

In 1651, the Earl of Derby spent his last night at the venue before being beheaded for his connection with the Bolton Massacre during the English Civil War.

The building is said to be haunted and ghostly sightings have oft-been reported over the years.

Number 12 Churchgate itself was a temperance bar, once known as Smokey Joe’s in the 19th century, before becoming a coffee bar in the 1940s.

In 2007, the 1,150 sq ft property was turned into a jewellery and gift shop called Ye Olde Wench and Trinkets.

The building was also home to a psychic centre, with a line in clairvoyancy, crystal ball and palm readings.

Pugh managing director Paul Thompson said: “This is a rare opportunity for an investor to buy a slice of Bolton history and to create a new incarnation for this fabulous old building that is something of a quirky landmark in the town.

“Unsurprisingly for a property of this age, a programme of restoration work is needed, as the first floor is unstable, but the property is in a great central location and, with some investment, could become a real asset to the community once again.”

Bidding on 12 Churchgate, and the other lots in Pugh’s online auction, opens on Tuesday, July 20, before closing the following day. To view the full catalogue, go to pugh-auctions.com
