The most popular homes for sale overseas among Britons viewing online have been revealed.

Rightmove looked at five of the most popular countries overseas on its website and then identified the most viewed property within each of these locations since the beginning of this year.

The five most popular countries among Britons looking at a home for sale overseas are the US, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain, according to the property website.

The values of the most viewed homes in each of those locations range from a three-bedroom villa in Ibiza for €627,500 – the equivalent of £538,000 – to an eight-bedroom mansion in Cannes on the French Riveria for €70million, the equivalent of £60million, suggesting many are simply window shopping for their fantasy home. 

The selection also includes a New York City townhouse designed by the architect Rafael Viñoly, who also designed the Walkie-Talkie building in London.

Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s property expert, said: ‘Although it’s been a difficult year for people looking to travel, Britain’s fascination with property and dreaming of a move abroad is as evident as ever.

‘From a luxury mansion in the city that never sleeps, to a stunning villa in the Algarve, overseas properties have continued to captivate the nation so far this year.’

Here are the most viewed properties overseas…

1. USA: New York townhouse, $50m (£36.5m)

This New York townhouse was designed by architect Rafael Viñoly, who also designed The Curve Theatre at 20 Fenchurch St in London – better known as the Walkie-Talkie building. 

The New York property has six bedrooms and seven levels spread across 10,400 square feet. 

It also boasts a rooftop terrace looking over Manhattan, with plenty of space to entertain friends outside.

But perhaps the most unusual feature at the 162 East 64th Street property is its curved glass façade, which is bulletproof.

The glass travelled from Germany to Spain where it was given its curved shape and was later laminated multiple times. 

The interior has a fresh and modern style which is flooded with natural light from the large skylight.

The skylight illuminates the way to a private roof deck with 360-degree views across the city. 

Security and safety were paramount in the construction process with the building supporting plenty of technology. 

The property was built in 2018 and has an asking price of $50million, the equivalent of £36.5million.
