Comedian Kate Smurthwaite has sparked a furious clash with fellow Jeremy Vine panelist Mike Parry over the ownership of second homes. Ms Smurthwaite told the Channel 5 show that the high rate of holiday homes in the UK played a part in fueling homelessness. Parry strongling stood up for the right of people to own a second home, pointing to the desire to create a space for oneself rather than opting for a hotel stay.

Ms Smurthwaite told Jeremy Vine: “I think it is a great idea to ban second homes I really do.

“The bottom line is there is enough housing in the UK for everybody.

“So we ultimately don’t have to have a homelessness problem.

“But why do we have a homelessness problem?

“Because people have got homes which are sat empty.”

Mike Parry clashed with his fellow panelist over second homeownership.

“I don’t really want to go to a hotel because I want to feel I am in my own space,” he argued.

“That I have worked all my life to earn and to pay for.”

The broadcaster argued that second homes generated much-needed employment.

He told Jeremy Vine: “I think it is a very big industry.

“Created an awful lot of employment.

“And the biggest problem we have in this country is we don’t build enough homes anywhere.”
