PETOSKEY — Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates students from Northern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula worked on leadership and team-building skills at the JMG Leadership Day on Oct. 27 at Camp Daggett near Petoskey.
The day’s activities included a ropes course, rock wall and zip line.
A total of 50 students participated in the event including students from Northwest Michigan Works JMG programs at Innovation High School and Mackinaw Trail Middle School in Cadillac, CASMAN Academy in Manistee, East Jordan, Pellston, North Ed Career Tech Center in Traverse City and Wexford-Missaukee Career Tech Center.
“It was a very neat chance to be in an environment with lots of people who stand out as leaders and be able to learn from each other and how to work well with each other in order to develop leadership skills,” said Mackenzie Vrieze, a JMG student at the Wexford-Missaukee Career Tech Center.
Ralph Caroll, a JMG student at CASMAN Academy, added “it was a great opportunity to interact with other JMG students and work on getting involved socially.”
Nina Kumfer, a JMG student at Cadillac Innovation High School, said everyone at the leadership day was very welcoming and supportive.
“I built a lot of team building skills, thank you,” Kumfer said.
Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates equips young people with the skills to overcome barriers and succeed in education, employment and in life. It is the leading program of Youth Solutions, Inc., a youth opportunity organization delivering employability and education services to young people across the state.
Northwest Michigan Works coordinates JMG programs at Cadillac’s Mackinaw Trail Middle School, Cadillac Public and Innovation High schools, CASMAN Academy in Manistee, Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District, the North Ed Career-Tech Center, the Wexford-Missaukee Career-Tech Center, drop out recovery programs in Cadillac, Kalkaska, Manistee, and Traverse City, and a college program at Northwestern Michigan College.
Since 2008, Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates has equipped more than 9,500 young adults with the skills to overcome barriers and succeed in education, employment and as citizens.
