THANE: The Thane crime branch unit-1 arrested the kingpin of a syndicate involved in duping people from Aurangabad and Kolhapur of lakh of rupee with the lure of providing government jobs, the police informed on Sunday.
According to senior inspector Anil Deshmukh at the crime branch unit-1, the accused, identified as Sandeep Kamble (37), a resident of Ghatkopar had approached several residents from the two districts since 2015 and lured them with jobs in several government agencies including the Indian army.
“The accused operates the racket and has several agents spread across the state who used to target aspirants with the lure of plum jobs. The accused used to sweet talk his targets and also claims of following the set procedure of undergoing training and giving exams thereby securing their trust. He had taken money to the tune of five lakhs from a few aspirants,” said police inspector Krishna Kokani at the crime branch.
However, luck ran out for the accused after a Kolhapur resident who suspected something amiss approached the local police. “The accused remained unavailable which raised suspicion following which he approached the police. A case was registered with the Laxmipuri police station but the accused remained elusive for the last six years,” said an official.
The crime branch sleuths meanwhile were tipped off about the presence of Kamble in the Shil Daighar area following which they laid a trap for him and arrested him and later handed over to the Kolhapur police. The Thane police suspect he might have duped several residents from Mumbai and metropolitan region also.
