‘Let’s get people back into work – in quality jobs with good wages’ – Northfield MP’s Westminster Diary

Northfield MP Gary Sambrook writes for the Standard.

HERE in Birmingham, Northfield, we have over 6,000 people unemployed.

A lasting legacy from the collapse of MG Rover made worst by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Getting local people back into work is one of my top priorities. And not just any work but good quality jobs with good wages. Since being an MP, I have been working with colleges, job centres, our West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, and the Government to do just that.

Many sectors have shortages of staff. From hospitality to HGV drivers.

While some think the solution is cheap foreign labour, I see this as an opportunity to get people who have been left behind into good quality jobs.

The days of mass immigration as a quick fix – prioritising cheaper foreign labour are over.

Regenerating our workforce is a top priority – putting into place the right support to help those forgotten families into work, some of which are multi-generational households of worker-less families.

That’s why as a Government – under our plan for jobs – we have invested in more work coaches, schemes such as KickStart where locally there are great examples of the impact it is making. But also fixing our immigration system so it works for our country first. Stopping uncontrolled mass immigration and using a points-based system that works for us.

Over the next 12 months, it’s my top aim to get unemployment down, see millions more invested into Birmingham

Northfield and to improve community spirit in our area.

We have two major developments, one in Kings Norton on the old Pilkington site and the other in Longbridge, which are going to create thousands of jobs.

We have HS2 in the city employing thousands of workers and many more via their suppliers. And big companies like Goldman Sachs are moving here and creating jobs too.

In the next 12 months, there will be job fairs and more skills-based training and I will be working with all the different bodies to make sure people can get back into work.
