A man has admitted stabbing seven people during a knife rampage in the city during which also left a young graduate dead.

Zephaniah McLeod, 28, of Nately Grove, Selly Oak, had already pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Jacob Billington, 23, on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Today he pleaded guilty to four charges of attempted murder and three of wounding with intent.

“The defendant suffered from paranoid schizophrenia at the time,” said Karim Khalil QC, prosecuting.

Eight people were stabbed in the early hours of September 6 last year in different parts of the city over the space of 90 minutes.

Mr Billington, a 23-year-old Sheffield Hallam graduate from Crosby, Merseyside, died from a wound to the neck.

The drummer, who was described as ‘kind, funny’ and the ‘light’ of his family’s life, had been in the city with friends on the fateful night.

The seven other people McLeod stabbed were Dimitar Bachvarov, Migle Dolobauskaite, Thomas Glassey, Michael Callaghan, Shane Rowley, Rhys Cummings and Ryan Bowers.
