Jamie Carragher helps support live-saving campaign at Westminster

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was in Westminster on Tuesday to help support the Oliver King Foundation.

Oliver King died from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) in 2011, at the age of just 12, moments after winning a swimming race at King David High School in Childwall.

SADS is the term used to describe heart conditions that can cause sudden death – usually among young people aged between 12 and 35.

For the best part of a decade, Oliver’s father, Mark, has been campaigning to have defibrillators set up in every school throughout the country to avoid another tragedy like the one that took his son.

The parliamentary event, sponsored by leading health and diagnostics firm DAM Health, took place in the House of Lords’ Attlee Room to build more political momentum around the foundation’s mission to make it a legal requirement for defibrillators to be installed across all schools in England.

Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP, Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey MP, Conservative MP James Grundy, former Conservative Party leader Michael Howard and influential Conservative Peer Lord Stuart Polak all threw their weight behind the Oliver King Foundation’s campaign yesterday.

Carragher was in attendance to support the campaign, and has outlined the importance of making the law for defibrillators in schools a legal requirement.

“The Oliver King Foundation has been working tirelessly for more than 10 years to make it a legal requirement for defibrillators to be installed in schools,” said Carragher.

“I was proud to join the charity and Mark King in parliament as they set out their case to the decision makers. It really is an easy win for the government – as we know, defibrillators save lives.”

Oliver King Foundation founder Mark King added: “Our parliamentary showcase comes as we ramp up our campaign with all hands to the deck to make sure the government moves on this vital issue.

“I am pleased that some of Westminster’s renowned political figures turned out to signal their support.

“We will not give up and not give in until we see a defibrillator in every school across the country.”
