Mike Walden, an economist with North Carolina State University, says many unfilled jobs require skills people don’t have, so people are getting retrained for new jobs instead of returning to what they did before the pandemic.

THAT IS GROWING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS, BUT THOSE KIND OF JOBS REQUIRE OFTEN A COLLEGE EDUCATION IN SPECIFIC AREAS AND A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT EMPLOYED DO NOT HAVE. I THINK THERE IS ANOTHER ASPECT TO THIS AND THAT IS THAT I THINK LAST YEAR CAUSED A LOT OF FOLKS TO REFLECT ON THEIR JOB SITUATION THEY HAD SOME SUPPORT FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WITH STIMULUS MONEY. WE THINK THERE IS PEOPLE WHO SAID THEY DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO THE LOWER PAYING JOBS THAT THEY HAVE HAD. OR THEY ARE GOING TO THOSE JOBS AND TRYING TO SEE IF THEY CAN GET SOME ON THE JOB TRAINING. >> DO YOU EXPECT TO SEE PEOPLE SHIFTING INTO THOSE JOBS? >> NO I DON’T. JUST THE RIVERS. WE HAD A LOT OF THEM INTO OTHER JOBS. IT HAS LEFT THE INDUSTRY IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION. IT IS ABOUT SOME OF THOSE BUSINESSES THAT ARE OFFERING COLLEGE TUITION PAYMENTS. THEY WILL HAVE TO ADJUST. FOR THE WORKERS, THAT IS GOOD. A LOT OF THOSE BUSINESSES ARE GOING TO GO TO AUTOMATION AND TECHNOLOGY. FOR EXAMPLE, FESTERING RESTAURANTS ARE NOW OPENING WHERE YOU ORDER ON A KIOSK. HOTELS AND CHECKLIST ENTRIES WHERE YOU GO DIRECTLY TO YOUR ROOM. THOSE INDUSTRIES WILL HAVE A TOUGH TIME RECRUITING WORKERS. SECONDLY, SEE IF YOU CAN BEGIN TO INTRODUCE TECHNOLOGY. THIRDLY, SEE IF YOU CAN ORGANIZE YOUR WORK DIFFERENTLY. SEE IF YOU CAN GET BY TO DO THE SAME AMOUNT OF BUSINESS WITH FEWER PEOPLE.
