Major police presence and large cordon as one man hurt after stabbing

A road in Bury has been cordoned off as police respond to a stabbing

Mersey Drive in Whitefield was closed off between Calder Crescent and Roch Crescent all morning.

GMP say one man has been hurt but is not seriously injured.

Two men have been arrested, the force said.

Photos from this morning showed a major police cordon in place and a number of CSI officers examining the scene.

A GMP spokesperson said: “Officers were called just after 7am this morning (20 November 2021) to a report of a stabbing on Mersey Drive, Whitefield.

“Emergency services attended and a male was taken to hospital with injuries that are not thought to be serious or life-threatening.

“A 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of assault.

“Officers are at the scene and a cordon is in place whilst enquiries are carried out. The cordon is due to be lifted shortly.

“The incident is believed to be isolated at this time.”

Local bus services were diverted with people are being advised to avoid the area if possible.

Residents had expressed their shock at the events this morning.

“We are all so shocked and worried about what has happened,” one neighbour says.

Another neighbour told the M.E.N: ““I moved here because it’s a nice place and nothing ever happens here.

“It’s such a shock to see all this happening. Where will I have to move to next?”

The road had reopened and the cordon lifted by 12pm.
