LIMA — More than 2,300 jobs are available in a 10-mile radius of Lima, according to numbers by Ohio Means Jobs.
“It’s definitely a job seeker market right now. My advice is if you don’t have a résumé yet, definitely build a professional résumé, come in and see us at Ohio Means Jobs we can definitely do that for you,” said Brenden Morehead, a career consultant with Ohio Means Jobs.
Employers are finding it tough to fill those openings and are actively recruiting people to apply.
On Saturday, the MakerFest Job Fair was held at Apollo Career Center to match prospective workers with employers.
“We have 117 positions posted today on crown.jobs — anywhere from corporate positions, engineering, IT, manufacturing, marketing — you name it,” said Andrea Huber, manufacturing recruiter for New Bremen-based Crown Equipment Corporation.
Participating in job fairs helps showcase employment opportunities at Crown.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for them to have somebody to talk to, to have somebody to reach out to find out what specific openings would be best for them to apply to,” Huber said.
Nutrien Lima is another local employer that has plenty of openings that pay well.
“We’re constantly looking for good new employees. Right now we’re looking for some maintenance technicians, chemical operators and a number of other positions. Our pay and benefits are probably some of the best in the region. I’ve just spoken with a couple of young men here that are thinking about the chemical operation position — that starts at $28 and change (per hour) to start,” said Russ Decker, manager of special projects at Nutrien.
Their openings can be found on the Ohio Means Jobs website.
This year’s MakerFest Job Fair attracted around 60 businesses from around the region.
“It’s about letting people know what jobs are out there but it’s also just showcasing the world-class employers that we have in the region. We’re fighting a perception from a lot of folks that they need to leave the area in order to build a career and that’s just not true,” said Doug Olsson, president/CEO of Greater Lima Region Inc.
The job fair also helps Apollo Career Center as well.
“It really gives us an opportunity to connect with potential students but at the same time to connect with businesses for us to help businesses create that pipeline of skilled workers and at the same time give students an opportunity to see what programming we have and then how we can upgrade their skills to get them the jobs they want with the businesses that are here,” said Tara Sheperd, director of adult education with Apollo Career Center.
Crown Equipment was one of nearly 60 businesses that was looking for employees at the MakerFest Job Fair Saturday at Apollo Career Center.
