Thrifty couple reveal how they paid for their $25,000 dream wedding by doing odd jobs for nine months – and have since bought FOUR investment properties

  • A young couple have revealed how they made $25,000 doing odd jobs
  • The couple wanted to start their life together ‘debt free’ and plan a wedding
  •  They paid off wedding expenses as they came by doing odd jobs for strangers

A young couple have explained how they paid for their dream wedding without going into debt by completing $25,000 worth of odd jobs in their spare time.

Office workers Joseph and Ash Green, both 27, were determined not to go into the red for their big day in 2018 – but didn’t want to have to limit their celebrations either.

So they rolled up their sleeves and built countless pieces of Ikea furniture, kids’ trampolines and helped strangers move house for cash.

What were their major wedding expenses?

Wedding venue (including food and drinks package): $12,000

Flowers: $2500

Videographer: $2000

Photographer: $1500

Bridesmaid’s essentials: $1000

Grooms suit: $800

Bride’s dress: $1500

‘We consider it our own style of marriage counselling,’ Joseph told FEMAIL.

The groom now ‘really enjoys putting Ikea furniture together’, a task that has many couples fighting rather than bonding.

‘We put a timer on and try to get it done as quickly as possible,’ he said, revealing making the job a game makes it much more bearable.

Joseph said between them they did about 60 jobs, using Airtasker, to fund their dream wedding.

‘I never would have believed it was possible before I actually did it,’ he said.

The couple ‘fell into’ doing the odd jobs and when they realised they could make between $70 and $100 per hour, decided to take it seriously.

For nine months they worked diligently in their spare time, paying off wedding expenses as they arose.

‘Being able to do X-amount of jobs as bills came in to pay everything off was the best part of the whole thing,’ he said.

Joseph is an operation’s manager for a church now, but once owned his own landscaping business – so he is no stranger to getting physical.

While Ash has an office job with the Australian Government.

The couple moved to Darwin shortly after tying the knot but decided to get married halfway, on the Gold Coast in Queensland.

The couple said they managed to afford their dream destination wedding on the Gold Coast

‘We have friends who got married and were left with $50,000 personal loans at the end of it. We didn’t want to go through that,’ he said.

‘And there are plenty of optional extras we could have gone with but at the end of the day we didn’t need the $2000 end of night fireworks, our day was perfect.’

Four years later Joseph does odd jobs on the app once a week.

And they didn't have to compromise on any of the 'fun' extras they'd always wanted

‘I consider it a hobby now, I like getting out there and talking to people and helping them out.’

In Darwin the jobs can be a little different to Melbourne suburbia, which is mostly helping people move or build odds and ends.

‘The other day I took someone’s click and collect order from Coles to a plane so it could be flown to one of the islands,’ he said.

‘Another day I helped an old lady lift a glass table top onto the table.’

Now the couple have a 16-month-old daughter together, live in Darwin and have four investment properties

The couple now share a 16-month-old daughter and have managed to buy four investment properties after starting their life together ‘wedding debt free’.

The couple have also used Airtasker to pay for jobs to be done. When they were expecting their daughter they sent someone to Ash’s parents’ house.

‘They gave them a pack of hot cross buns and told them to put them in the oven, because ours already was,’ he said.

‘And once I left my keys at home so got someone to grab them and bring them to me,’ he added.
