Tower Hamlets has launched 33 internal placements as part of the Kickstart Scheme to give young people six months paid work experience to improve their chances of finding a permanent job.
The scheme, which launched last year, has successfully provided job opportunities across Tower Hamlets with local young people having access to over 700 placements.
Each placement has been funded by the government who pay the national minimum wage based on a 25 hour per week placement and provides the opportunity for young people to gain valuable experience and training while the employer gets an additional resource.
John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said: “Over the last year and as a result of Covid-19, we have seen our young people hardest hit by the economic downturn and the rise of unemployment. We want to help our young people and I’m delighted we can offer so many work placements within Tower Hamlets Council.
“These roles will support our new recruits in gaining confidence and transferrable skills to use towards any future education or employment.”
In total, 340 young people aged 16-24 have started Kickstart placements through the Tower Hamlets gateway. The council has added to this with the delivery of 33 placements paid at London Living Wage in which 16 young people have already been allocated in areas such as legal, housing, markets, children services and employment & skills.
Cllr Motin Uz-Zaman, Cabinet Member for Work, Economic Growth and Faith said: “I’m thrilled to welcome the sixteen young people who have joined us in our latest Kickstart cohort. This programme is an excellent opportunity for young people in Tower Hamlets to gain valuable hands-on work experience to develop their careers long-term.
“We continue to do all we can to create opportunities for our young people and Kickstart has played a major part in this. I look forward to seeing what our new recruits achieve and urge anyone who is eligible to apply for one of the remaining roles here at the council.”
Each Kickstart placement is open to all skill and experience levels with the council seeking individuals who are aged 24 and under, receiving universal credit, committed and willing to learn.
