AN MP is urging local businesses to take part in a scheme that aims to help young people into employment.

Flick Drummond, of the Meon Valley Constituency, hopes companies will sign up to the Government’s Kickstart initiative for 16-24 year olds.

The call came after she visited JobCentre Plus to speak to staff about the scheme, plus other employment and training opportunities.

She spoke with regional manager Gary Langfield who told her the Kickstart scheme is working really well.

Flick Drummond MP speaks on the Kickstart scheme

“There are a record number of job vacancies across the UK right now, so the jobs market is very buoyant but youth unemployment is a bigger issue so Kickstart is a great way to ensure younger people get job experience,” said Flick.

“But we need as many employers as possible to sign up for the scheme to help more and more young people into work.

“In the Meon Valley the unemployment count for adults and young people is below the national averages but there should be no complacency. The best way to get on is to have a job.”

The £2 billion Kickstart programme is designed to help young people aged 16 to 24 claiming Universal Credit receive a six-month work placement.

Their wages, National Insurance and pension for 25 hours a week is paid by the Government.

Employers who sign up can top up the wage and the Government will also pay employers £1500 to set up support and training for Kickstarters.
