More than 100 new homes for a Leicestershire town look set to be given the go ahead despite highly vocal opposition.

The plans, which go before planning bosses next week, would see up to 101 new homes built on land north of Waterworks Road in Coalville, with the proposal set to be given the green light by those at North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC).

But the proposals, which have been submitted by the council themselves, have attracted waves of criticism, with petitions of more than 1,000 people objecting to the scheme.

Currently open recreation land, the proposed site would see the homes add to an already built up area within Coalville, with residents on surrounding streets raising significant concerns about highways issues.

The only access to this new estate and its 200 or so additional cars will be via Buckingham Road, said one concerned resident. No one has given any thought to the large number of cars that will enter our tiny cul de sac road.

Others object to the scheme because of the loss of green space for the residents.

We need the trees and bushes to provide oxygen, which because of Bardon Road and the rest of the anticipated influx of people because of current building, is needed more than ever, said one person.

The feelings run high in the community with the planning report acknowledging more than 100 letters of objection.

That’s in addition to two separate petitions, one containing 809 signatures, the other having 207, which both call on the plans to be rejected.

However, planning documents show that NWLDC planning bosses believe the site ‘would make a positive contribution’ to economic growth in the area.

They also say it will deliver a ‘20 per cent affordable housing contribution’ to Coalville, which they feel would be ‘positive’ for the greater North West Leicestershire area.
