THE council has launched the latest phase of its Keep Brighton and Hove Tidy campaign by cleaning some of the main streets across the city.

A team of Cityclean staff is using high pressure hoses to jet wash bins, street furniture, lamp posts and pavements, and paint out ugly graffiti tags on council owned property in five city locations.

The four day clean up, from today until Friday, is the latest in the council’s series of city deep cleans, and also ties in with this year’s national Keep Britain Tidy event which is running until June 13.Last September and more recently, the council has carried out deep cleans in the city centre, mainly around Queen’s Road, the Laines, North Street and Western Road. The council placed extra bins on the seafront on top of the 70 additional bins put there earlier this year, with more bin collections.

Seafront railings and seafront shelters have been painted and teams have also been out clearing litter from the busy A27.

This time, the deep clean starts in The Lanes before moving to Hove and Portslade, with the work starting at 9pm until 5am. The schedule is:

• Today – Kensington Gardens/Gloucester Road and Hove Town Hall (seating area on Church Road)

• Wednesday – George Street, Hove

• Thursday – Goldstone Villas/Hove Station

• Friday – Boundary Road, Portslade

The council says the work will be on top of its daily recycling and refuse collections which will continue as normal.

The council’s Tidy Up Team also organised series of events over the week, starting on Bank Holiday Monday and ending on Sunday 6 June. Town hall bosses say these are events everyone can get involved in:

The Adopt-a-Street scheme encourage volunteers to look after a street and help keep their neighbourhood clean’

For the A Tin of Black Paint and a Brush project will see council staff and volunteers paint out graffiti on communal bins.

In Dust Up Your Doorstep the council is asking for volunteers to look at cleaning up outside where they live by picking litter, removing weeds, jet washing pavements if possible, and anything else to make the area outside their home clean

And in the The Lewes Road Big Tidy Up residents are invited to help clean up this busy road by removing stickers, collecting litter, painting out graffiti and removing weeds

The tidy up week ends with Mayor Alan Robins’ Big Tidy Up on the beach.

Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “We’re really delighted to once again be taking to the city’s streets, continuing our work to Keep Brighton and Hove Tidy, as part of the national Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

“This year we’ll be concentrating our efforts on key areas of Hove plus Portslade’s main shopping road.

“In the last few days, the council has placed extra bins on our seafront, with more bin collections. Seafront railings and seafront shelters have been painted and teams have been out clearing masses of litter from the busy A27.

“I’m hoping traders and residents will get involved. Together, let’s take pride in our city as we recover from the pandemic.”

Cllr Mac Cafferty added: “Keeping Brighton and Hove Tidy is everyone’s responsibility, and this can be anyone, including residents, businesses, volunteers, council staff, councillors, tidy up teams, beach cleaners and students.”

“I, and other councillors and staff, will be out during the week carrying out tidy ups in the city and getting involved in different events. I would encourage residents and businesses to get involved how they can.”

Cllr Mac Cafferty has written to businesses again this year setting out the council’s plans and asking for support where possible. This could be by cleaning outside their premises, removing graffiti from their building or cleaning their trade bin.

He added: “I firmly believe our city has a great future ahead and we will bounce back from the pandemic even stronger and in better shape than before.

“Cleaning up our city is an essential part of safe reopening.”

The council says anyone who carries out a tidy up, or contributes in any way, can post information on its Twitter and Facebook accounts, or at #KeepBHTidy and #GBSpringClean, with images and telling how they got involved. The council will, it says, then retweet and repost a huge thank you.
