A pensioner has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire reportedly ripped through a property in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police closed the A483, Lion Lane, Builth Wells, which runs through the centre of the rural town at around 2am, with a significant emergency response arriving at the scene.

One witness, who was working in one of the town’s pubs on Saturday night, described seeing flames above the rooftops of the shops on the high street and when he went out to see, realised it was from the buildings behind.

Another said everyone in the properties along Lion Lane were OK but some were badly shaken by the events.
