People are desperate for jobs, prepared to do hard labour – South Coast Herald

So social media has been buzzing with jokes, comments and false information about a factory at the Durban Harbour “kwasawoti”.

Kwasawoti (sawoti meaning salt, yes salt ) is apparently a work area or factory at the harbour where people carry 50kg of salt to be distributed.

It is said that it is hard labour but one gets paid R400 – R600 a day.

That is a lot of money in one day and quite a good salary per month.

People have been asking about the location of this place.

That is when I realised that people are desperate out there and would do any sort of hard labour just to put food on the table.

Many lost their jobs two years ago due to Covid, and things have not been easy as there are no jobs available.

With food prices going up even from the cheapest supermarkets and petrol going up all the time it is not easy at all.

Some of us are lucky that we still have our jobs, but even so, we are struggling and trying to make ends meet every month.

So anyway this “sawoti” has been so popular on social media that there were pictures circulating showing people walking to find this factory.

It broke my heart to hear that there is no such thing at the Durban Harbour, it was all just a lie.

How this started, I have no idea but I know for a fact that when someone promises you a job it gives you hope, and when you find out that it does not exist or you will not get it, it breaks you.

People are jobless that they would actually travel as far as from northern KZN to get to this place to find a job.

I know people who are willing to relocate to other provinces for better job opportunities, which is not a bad thing.

But some people lose their state of mind if they are away from home for a long time.

The unemployment issue is really becoming another pandemic in our country.

As much as things are tough out there, people should also be careful of these false job advertisements.

Almost everyday I get a notification on my Facebook account to say that a certain business is hiring.

It is always the same local private hospital, so one day I picked up the phone and asked them about it.

They told me there was no such thing, we should also be careful and do our research and ask people if they have heard or know of certain factories or companies.

Rather spend R10 airtime trying to find out if something is legit instead of spending a couple of hundred of rands travelling to places that do not exist.

Another scam that is doing the rounds that scammers are making money off, is the accommodation scam.

Before you book a holiday home, lodge, B&B make sure it really does exist.

Let’s hope 2022 is going to be kind to us, and those looking for jobs and better opportunities do not find themselves in a situation like that of kwasawoti.
