To the editor:

I don’t live in Saranac Lake anymore, but I still refer to it as “home.” It’s the best place I’ve ever lived (even with the seemingly endless winters), and I’m still highly invested in its future. My amazing mother owns and operates a business there, one that will be opening its brick-and-mortar doors very soon, and I want nothing more than to see her long-term success. I have many friends there still, too, and I want them to have the brightest of futures!

That’s why I’m writing this. Although I can’t back Jim Williams with a vote, I will offer up my excitement and support from afar. I believe he’s what’s best for Saranac Lake in the years to come.

Why do I feel that way? So many reasons. The first and foremost, though, is his commitment to serving his country for 15 years. The role that he played in the U.S. military is one that most people will probably never understand. Putting one’s country and brothers and sisters first 100% of the time for 15 years is something that most probably can’t fathom doing. But this man did that, and now, rather than sitting back and enjoying the small business owner/operator life, he still wants to continue his public service to the people of Saranac Lake. You can look, but you won’t find anyone more committed than that.

There are many more reasons that I could share, but I’ll leave it at the aforementioned, and just one more: “People first, party second.” He said something akin to this at a recent democratic caucus, and that really stuck out to me. In a country that exists so scarily dichotomously, where it feels like the only thing we amount to anymore is our political affiliation, isn’t it about time we look to someone who stands on the middle ground?

People before party and unending, unrelenting public service. That’s why I’d be voting for Jim if I still lived in Saranac Lake. I hope you’ll all consider this next week as you cast your votes.
