Tenants have been asked to sign up to a pioneering initiative in Glasgow to get their views on reforming the private rented sector.
In partnership with TIS (Tenants Information Service), Glasgow City Council has launched a tenant-led housing commission and wants tenants to join the board and help to shape the future of Glasgow’s housing.
Councillor Kenny McLean (pictured), city convener for neighbourhoods, housing and public realm, says it offers the council a chance to consider the issues facing many people in the private sector, and recommend actions to tackle these issues.
He adds: “A key condition of the establishment of the commission is that most of the people sitting on it will have experience of being a tenant in the sector in the city, and this lived experience will be a great benefit in reflecting the reality of the situation and making the necessary recommendations.”
The commission will investigate the extent of the PRS and how it meets different housing needs and demand and will engage with key stakeholder groups and the public to gather evidence.
It also plans to set up a robust monitoring and evaluation framework for private rented housing across Glasgow that addresses the issues of housing supply, choice, rents and affordability. Its final report will make recommendations for reforms to improve the sector and inform Glasgow’s housing strategy.
