Police launch investigation after woman dies in house fire

An elderly woman has died in a house fire in a quiet Welsh village.

Police and firefighters have confirmed a joint investigation has been launched into a fire which claimed the life of the 78-year-old.

It happened on Wednesday, November 3 at a property in Coelbren, Abercrave.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed fire crews from Abercrave, Seven Sisters, Pontardawe and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at 8.24pm and left the incident at 11.20pm.

The woman’s next-of-kin have been informed of her death, police have confirmed, and are being supported by specialist officers.

Police are appealing for anyone with information on the incident to report it either online here, by emailing officers or by calling 101, quoting reference DP – 2021 11 03 – 330.

A statement from Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating a fire at a property in Cefn Byrle Road, Coelbren on Wednesday, November 3, in which a 78-year-old woman sadly died.

“Next of kin have been informed and will continue to be supported by specialist officers.

“Police and fire officers will be carrying out a joint investigation to establish the cause of the fire, which is being treated as unexplained at this time.

“Officers and PCSOs will continue with scene preservation duties and cordons will remain in place whilst enquiries are ongoing. However every effort will be made to minimise any disruption.

A statement from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service added: “On Wednesday, November 3, at 8.24pm, crews from Abercrave, Seven Sisters and Pontardawe, along with crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended a property fire in Coelbren, Abercrave.

“Police and Ambulance were also in attendance. Firefighters extinguished the fire and left the incident at 11.20pm. The incident is under Police and Fire investigation.”
