Policy Executive

Are you looking for an opportunity to get involved in influencing the future shape of public policy and legislation in Scotland? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our External Relations team as a Policy Executive, 37,000 per annum.

The Team:

As the professional body for over 12,000 Scottish solicitors, the Law Society of Scotland seeks to lead legal excellence. Not only do we regulate the solicitor profession in the public interest, we provide services and support to help that profession thrive. We also play a key role to influence public policy decision making and create a fair and just society.

Our External Relations directorate covers communications, policy development, research and our international work. Our Policy Team aims to influence the creation of a fairer and more just society, responding to consultations, legislation and other policy developments at Holyrood, Westminster and Brussels. They support a range of specialist committees populated by volunteers who are experts in their fields in the academic, commercial, public and third sectors.

Our policy executives work to analyse and respond to proposed changes in the law from the Scottish and Westminster Parliaments. In 2019/2020 we responded to 93 consultations across the Scottish and UK governments and the European Commission and commented on 36 bills passing through Holyrood and Westminster.

Policy executives working for us frequently give evidence at parliamentary committees, helping to ensure that new laws or changes to existing ones are clear and will work in practice.

The Role:

Reporting to our Head of Policy, the successful candidate will:

  • Influence civil law policy – particularly in areas such as intellectual property, competition, banking, company and insolvency law;
  • Work with volunteers on our policy committees in these areas to respond to consultations, legislation and other policy developments;
  • Engage with UK and Scottish governments and a wide range of stakeholders on relevant policy developments affecting our members, their clients and the public interest.

The role is offered on a permanent and full-time basis. Because of current public health restrictions, the role will involve remote working initially, and we will continue to offer flexibility to choose a balance of home/office working which suits you even when our office reopens.

The Candidate:

You don’t have to be a solicitor to work with us. With the changing legal landscape following the UK’s exit from the European Union, in addition to the wider legislative and public policy programmes in Scotland and across the UK, this will be a dynamic role for a capable, organised legal or policy professional to make a difference.

You will have experience of the legal issues in a commercial context, with exposure to one or more of the following areas: company law, intellectual property, competition, banking, company, or insolvency law. You will be able to manage projects effectively, scoping, developing and implementing programmes of work. Working extensively with our expert committees and external stakeholders, you will be a fluent communicator, able to engage and collaborate to achieve positive change.

What will I receive in return?

  • 35 hour working week
  • 25 (rising to 30 after 5 years’ service) Days Holiday plus Bank Holidays
  • Flexitime
  • Training and/or CPD is available for the successful candidate

As an organisation our values are respect, openness, progress, inclusion and integrity. We strive to embed these in all our interactions with colleagues, members, stakeholders and members of the public.
