Prince Harry: ‘Why should he have protection?’ asks Seward

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reported to have renewed their lease on Frogmore Cottage. They have not lived in the property, half a mile south of Windsor Castle, since moving to the US two years ago. It is now being used by Harry’s cousin and close friend Princess Eugenie, her husband Jack Brooksbank and their baby August. Renewing the lease means Harry can continue to deputise for the Queen despite living in California.

The Telegraph reports that he can continue to serve as one of her four Counsellors of State as his old Windsor address means he is domiciled in Britain.

The news comes as the Sussexes continue to work on their own private business ventures abroad after stepping back as senior working royals in January 2020.

Alongside their projects with streaming giants Spotify and Netflix, they carry out a range of charitable engagements through their Archewell Foundation.

Charity has played an enormous part in Meghan and Harry’s relationship, frequently volunteering at events and talking to those involved with various charities.

Angela Levin, royal expert and author, spent over a year on and off accompanying Harry around the UK on his various activities.

Writing in her 2018 book ‘Harry: Conversations with the Prince’, she recalled the two techniques Harry uses to shine on his engagements.

She recalled one particular trip to Nottingham: “The royal limousine and its motorbike outriders arrived punctually and, as usual, Harry bolted out of the car like a racehorse released from its stall.

“It’s a technique that gives the impression that he couldn’t wait to get there and is delighted to see whoever he is.”

Ms Levin continued: “Another is to totally focus on the individual — not necessarily to the administrators — he talks to, and only them.

“He doesn’t look around and instead engages them fully, listens carefully to what they say and is always sympathetic.

“It sounds extraordinary, but I saw time and again how a few words from him can give people, who looked scared, in pain or depressed, a real boost of hope and confidence.”

Ms Levin explained Harry did not mind whether or not people curtsy or bow when meeting him, and thoroughly enjoyed speaking to the young people at the youth group he was visiting.

Harry’s own life experiences, Ms Levin wrote, have allowed him to develop an ability to engage with people and ask about their state of mind in a way that does not upset them.

She wrote: “It’s something that even professional therapists might inch gradually towards. Harry is a natural.

“His only training has been a two-day course at the London District Personnel Recovery Unit when he left the army in 2015.”

Harry’s personality is said to “unquestionably” resemble his late mother, Princess Diana’s voice coach said.

Stewart Pearce, author of Diana: The Voice of Change, told US Weekly last year that while William looks more like his mum on the outside, Harry “embodies his mum” with his personality.

He said: “Harry, in terms of his impetuosity [is Diana]. Harry, in terms of his intuitive explosions of energy, [is the most like her].

“I suppose, slightly, William from the external point of view. But Harry from [his] wonderful ebullience [and] passionate [personality embodies his mother].

“He’s the guy. He loves life. He has fun.”

Harry, meanwhile, began his legal proceedings against the Home Office this week after his bid to personally pay for police protection while in the UK was rejected.

His legal representative, Shaheed Fatima QC, told the court Harry “does not feel safe when he is in the UK given the security arrangements applied to him in June 2021 and will continue to be applied to him”.

Harry’s car was reportedly chased through London by photographers during his last visit to the UK for the unveiling of his mother’s statue.

Ms Fatima added: “It goes without saying that he does want to come back to see his family and friends and to continue to support the charities that are so close to his heart.

“Most of all, this is and always will be his home.”
