Pune: Man defrauds people of lakhs on pretext of giving jobs in Army; arrested

Pune: In a good win for the Southern Command’s Military Intelligence unit, along with the Ahmednagar police, a man was arrested on Friday night on charges of allegedly posing as an Army officer and defrauding several youths to the tune of lakhs on the pretext of providing jobs in the Army.

Furthermore, in order to give the fraud a real touch, the accused even issued fake joining letters and medical slips to the job aspirants.

The arrestee, identified as Navnath Salvleram Guldagad, is a resident of the Ahmednagar district. Elaborating further on the case, sub-inspector SK Narheda said, “We have recovered fake Army uniforms with insignia. He would then promise them jobs in the Army and charge them lakhs of rupees, according to the report published in the Times of India.

He further went on to say that the incident came to everybody’s notice after they got specific input about his activity from the Military Intelligence of the Southern Command a few days back.

Meanwhile, a resident of Kankhar village, Laxmikant Dave (28) approached the cops to lodge an FIR against the suspect after he was defrauded of Rs 8 lakh. He added that the accused took money from him on various pretexts from November 2019, as per the police.

Commenting further on the case, the police stated that they have received similar complaints from at least 4 people and it was revealed that the accused Guldagad used the same modus in the last 3 years for duping people.

As per the preliminary probe, it was revealed that the accused bought Army insignias from different shops in Pune. He even clicked pictures at defence establishments in Pune and Ahmednagar’s gate and he had uploaded the same on social media.

Furnishing more information on the case, an officer probing the case said that the accused even informed his wife’s parents that he was working as a para commando in the Army and was posted at the Army unit in Aurangabad.

The accused was produced before the court and was sent to police custody till February 23.
