Pune: Man poses as army officer, cheats people on pretext of jobs in defence services

Pune: In yet another case of cheating, a man posed as Indian Army major and cheated multiple people promising them jobs in defence services in an ongoing recruitment drive being conducted at Nashik Artillery Centre.

The accused has now been arrested by Nashik police. The man posed as ‘Major Ganesh Pawar and claimed he was posted at an artillery formation in Haryana. 

The cheat was arrested from Deolali Cantonment in Naskik following a tip-off by the Military Intelligence unit of Pune-headquartered Southern Command. He was wearing army uniform of the rank of major during his arrest, according to a report in Indian Express.

   

When the security team asked the cheat for his credentials, he said he did not have an identity card. Later, police contacted the defence establishment and it was revealed that he was an imposter. 

The accused has been handed over to Deolali Camp Police. Several fake documents like service certificate, character certificate, Form 16 (TDS certificate) were recovered from him. 

Police said that the accused even took a loan from a bank in Nashik using forged documents. The vehicle used by Pawar was driven by a youth who was promised a job as a civilian driver in the army in lieu of Rs 3 lakh.

“The accused was produced before a court and was remanded to police custody for two days. The primary probe suggests that he has taken money from some people on the pretext of giving them jobs in the Army. With his fake uniform of Major rank, he was possibly going around the Cantonment area trying to cheat people,” the report quoted Kundhan Jadhav, SHO, Deolali Camp police station. 

The accused has been booked for cheating, impersonation, forgery of IPC and other sections of the Official Secrets Act.
