How did you join the property industry?
It all started when I lived in New York. I went over to help the fashion businesses and ended up investing in property. Then I came back to the UK, where I was presented with the opportunity to work in the property business.
What does your job entail?
My time is split between three businesses: I am the chief executive of Kamani Property Group, KM Capital and, more recently, a new property app called MoveStreets.
What do you like most about the property industry?
The fact that I can take on an old building and put some life back into it and see the impact/change I have had, not only on that building but in the city, too.
And what do you dislike most about it?
I would say when you have a vision of what you want to do and the whole process of getting that authorised is a long process. And even after that, you do not always get what you want. However, I am not complaining because everything works out the way it should.
What do you want to change about the industry?
Most industries in the world have changed with technology and social media. The way we look for homes is still the same way it was 20 years ago.
We launched MoveStreets to combine the way we search for property in a similar way we search for a date – by swiping right or left. So far, we have matched more than 70,000 people with a home they want to buy or rent.
What barriers or challenges have you overcome?
First, trying to identify Kamani Property as a business and putting us on the radar; that took around a year. Second, the pandemic has made the business rethink the way we operate and it has taught us how to be more resilient.
What do you like most about yourself?
I like that I’m very approachable and welcoming to everyone. I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt before I make a judgement.
What are you most proud of in your career?
There is a lot to be proud of and it is only the start. However, the team and culture we have built in such a short period of time is something I smile about.
What do you value in people?
Honesty, loyalty and ambition.
What advice would you give someone starting a career in the property industry?
Take your time and do as much research as you can. Ask all the questions – there are no stupid questions when you are starting off. Lastly, surround yourself with good people who can help you.
