Ranchi: Governor Ramesh Bais on Friday assured reservation for transgender people in state government jobs. Bais made the assurance to a delegation of the Divyam Dream Foundation who came to apprise him of their plight at the Raj Bhavan.
The delegation was led by the foundation’s president Kumud Jha. After meeting the governor, Jha said states like Karnataka and Bihar have provided reservations for jobs for transgender people in public services and government jobs but the Jharkhand government is yet to take up any such move.
“We wrote to chief minister Hemant Soren a year ago, seeking his time so that we can highlight our issues and direct the government to address them. However, we still have not received any reply,” Jha said that the letter was also sent via Whatsapp to the Women and Child Development secretary, Avinash Kumar on April 1.
Notably, the Supreme Court in a ruling had directed for appointment of transgender people in public services and reservation in admissions to educational institutes. Jha further said the ‘Garima Grih’ under the Centre’s ‘Smile Yojana’ meant to provide shelter homes and livelihood schemes for trans individuals is in a shambles in Jharkhand.
“Trans individuals who are seeking education and eligible for scholarships have not received anything under the scheme yet. Moreover, there is no trace of the shelter homes,” Jha added.
