A historic estate in West Sussex in South East England that has undergone a comprehensive restoration has come to the market for £4.5 million (US$5.54 million).

Dubbed Barnham Court, the 6.2-acre property was built in the first half of the 17th century and believed to be a sister house to Kew Palace, the 16th-century royal palace on the banks of Thames River, according to Savills, which is handling the sale along with Inigo.

The two estate agencies listed the property at the end of last month.

The property was listed as a Grade I building, which is considered to be of “exceptional architectural or historic interest” by Historic England, a national  preservation organization. The mansion, as well as its Anglo-Dutch parterre gardens, have been restored and renovated, the listing said.

“With an abundance of exquisite period features, grand yet liveable entertaining spaces and a thoughtful renovation, the house provides the perfect blend of a country lifestyle, with modern amenities,” Phillippa Dalby-Welsh, listing agent of Savills Country Department, said in a statement.

The main, red-brick house has nearly 10,000 square feet of living space with four bedroom suites, a reception hall, a library, a great room, a dining room, a kitchen and a wine cellar, according to the listing. Most rooms have views of the gardens and vistas beyond.

There is also a standalone one-bedroom cottage and other ancillary structures, which are used as a garage and staff quarters, but could be converted to office space or additional accommodation, according to the listing.

In addition to formal and informal gardens, there is an orchard, a pond, an island and a heated swimming pool on the grounds, the listing said.

The house is situated in a prime location close to the south coast, “and will provide a family or even an art collector with the ultimate lifestyle,” Ms. Dalby-Welsh said.

The property has been kept in the same family since 1996. The current owners, who spoke to Mansion Global on condition of anonymity, said they are spending more time in the U.S. and Australia and decided it’s time for another family to enjoy the home.

The property is located about 61 miles from London and just a few miles from the sea.
