Revealed: The winners of the 2020-21 Leicestershire ProCon Property and Construction Awards

The best construction projects in Leicestershire have been named winners of the 2020-21 ProCon Leicestershire Awards.

Hotels, homes and a hospitality venue all won during a ceremony at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, which was attended by more than 600 people.

Four corporate sponsors backed the 18th awards – Gateley Legal, Salus Approved Inspectors, Unique Window Systems and Vistry Partnerships. The Leicester Mercury was the awards’ media partner.

ProCon chair Umesh Desai : “Congratulations to our winners. The crop of entries for these extended awards was spectacular. The quality of projects submitted was truly excellent.

“Our thanks go to all the entrants, our judges who had such a difficult job and to our sponsors for their amazing support.”

During the black tie event a raffle was held, with proceeds going to the muscular dystrophy charity Alex’s Wish and a new bursary set up in memory of ProCon Leicestershire founder and chair for 20 years, Pam Allardice.

The River Soar and Grand Union Canal Access and Environmental Improvement Programme, submitted by Leicester City Council, won an innovation prize.

SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway, which won Infrastructure Project of the Year, is a nationally significant project with a 50-acre strategic rail freight interchange and six million square feet of industrial warehouse space.

Rob Cook, civils and infrastructure director at Winvic, said: “Few projects are as large, broad and geographically significant. We’re delighted the ProCon Awards judges have recognised the hard work that has gone into transforming a 700-acre blank canvas into a bustling inland port.”

Regeneration Project of the Year winner Great Central Square is a £58 million scheme at the heart of Leicester that has been a catalyst for £200 million of wider development in the city.

Richard Frape, project director at Morgan Sindall, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive the regeneration award.

“As someone who has lived and worked in Leicester and the surrounding county all my life, being able to be part of a project that has sparked new life into an area of the city that had laid dormant is something truly special.”



Great Central Square

Great Central Station is home to the Lane7 bowling alley within the same scheme and was named Small Non-Residential Scheme of the Year. The former station has been transformed into a thriving leisure and nightlife venue.

Joseph Murphy, of Charles Street Buildings, said: “CSB is delighted that the restoration of the former Leicester Central station has been recognised with this award.

“Restoration was combined with modern design principles to bring out the station’s features and original design, resulting in a unique space which now has a future as an entertainment venue for residents of Leicester and further afield for decades to come.”

Large Non-Residential Scheme of the Year was Phase 1B of Everards Meadows, the third phase of the p;ub business’s relocation strategy to create a viable and vibrant destination.

Tim Ward, who was operations director at Everards and is now a consultant, said: “The building has a special significance as Everards’ prestigious new home, performing numerous functions to many different audiences as well as subtly changing customer perception of the business.

“I am sincerely grateful for the enduring collaboration, teamwork and effort employed completing such a great project.”

The Small Residential Scheme of the Year was Forest View, Belton, a new-build house that was designed to have minimal maintenance and be carbon neutral.

Owner Peter Crichton said: “We are delighted to have received this award.

“Of course, we would not have succeeded without the support and help from our technical support, contractors and suppliers, who collectively made the whole project more successful through their contributions.”

Medium Residential Scheme of the Year was the Bull in the Oak, Cadeby, where five homes have been built after a farm was relocated and the former site redeveloped with new structures emulating farm building styles.

James Botterill, director of HSSP Architects, said: “We are elated to win a ProCon Award for Bull in the Oak.

“This is a group of buildings that have become more than the sum of their parts; a cohesive set that work together to create a sense of place and occasion, and also complement the original farmhouse and outbuildings.”

Large Residential Scheme of the Year was The Mill, Loughborough, a former hosiery mill facing dereliction, which has been reclaimed and restored as 76 luxury apartments in a waterside setting.

Richard Cooper, director of HSSP Architects, said: “We are delighted to win a ProCon award for The Mill.

“The project took inspiration from the mill’s past and it is now a wonderful fusion of vibrant mindful living that submerges itself in the historic elements of the building, yet has reinvented itself by looking to today, and to the future.”

Property Deal of the Year was the Novotel and Adagio Hotel, Leicester, part of a new regeneration scheme developed by Charles Street Buildings.

Joseph Murphy, of Charles Street Buildings, said: “CSB are delighted that the agreements reached with Accor, Adagio Aparthotels and Interstate have been recognised as Property Deal of the Year.

“The agreements enabled and directed the construction of new four star hotels with premium design externally and internally.”
