SELANGOR is taking steps to record the number of children with disabilities under its Selangor Educational Support Centre for Special Needs Children (Anis).

This is an important step forward in the future to help people with disabilities gain employment.

State health, welfare, women empowerment and family committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said a lot of effort was being put in to help children with various disabilities improve, so relevant data was needed to help find the right employment for people with specific talents.

“Children given the right intervention at a young age are able to function well.

“Our actions must lead to better and specific support for people with disabilities,” she said.

Anis Centre is run by Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor with the cooperation of Education Ministry’s Genius Kurnia Centre to provide expertise and consultation services.

Anis Centre provides early detection and intervention for special needs children who have autism, Down Syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), global developmental delay (GDD) and learning disabilities for those aged two to six months.

Dr Siti said the centre also provided training and long-term courses for parents, educators and the community as well as increase the cooperation of experts and volunteers in the field of psychology in developing comprehensive and inclu- sive intervention.

At the Anis Symposium held at Wyndham Acmar Klang, Dr Siti said 2,500 special needs educators would be given training and courses on methods to educate or guide special needs children in the near future.

“We will start with a programme called ‘Didik Anis’ that will be done in stages with 100 teachers from universities and agencies who have experience in teaching special needs children.

“Basic training for the children is crucial to mould them into independent individuals,” she said.

Dr Siti added that RM3mil was allocated under the Selangor Budget 2022 to help special needs children under the Selangor Special Needs Children Department.
