A centre in West Cumbria is offering people who are not in employment or education the chance to improve their lives.

Skills For You in Cleator Moor is running a programme called The Art of Relaxation to help people gain more confidence and overcome anxiety surrounding employment.

The course offers a therapeutic approach to getting ready for employment.

Karen Jones, Managing Director, said: “It is run by a therapeutic life coach who helps people who are not quite job ready and help them overcome anxiety and depression.

“At the moment they are doing a stitching panel where everyone involved can stitch something that they like and attach it to the piece.

“The have been stitching a variety of things like: flowers, rainbows, shapes, colours and poetry.

“Keswick Pencil Factory donated the paints to help to create the panel and without their help it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Skills For You have also received help for the project from Copeland Community Fund, Sellafield Ltd and Cumbria Community Foundation.

We have been told that a lot of the people who have joined have found it to be really beneficial and have enjoyed the experience.

Karen described a major transformation with some of the people who have been a part of the programme with some of them going off to find employment.

Some people were referred by their doctor whilst others wanted to build up their CV.

Karen explained that because of the lockdown it has been very difficult for lots of people so she is pleased to see the improvement that they have made.

“It’s fun and a positive experience, we want people to engage with it to help them move on with their lives.”
