To the editor:

In responding to the Public Forum letter, “Stop trying to push your religious beliefs onto students”, my intent in all my letters regarding the presence of the LGBTSQ+ flag in the Marshall Middle School has simply been to support our constitutional rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

There is a line in the song, “You Light Up My Life”, which Debbie Boone sang, that states, “It can’t be wrong if it feels so right.”

Everyone has various desires and everyone makes choices whether to act on those desires or not. Some people make that choice based on their desires; other people strive to make their choices based on God’s desires as stated in His Word, the Bible.

Did Middle School Christian students hang a flag that supports their beliefs which would have been a flag with the symbols for man and woman with the circles intertwined?

No, another flag was hung and they were told they didn’t need a flag because they were “white supremacists”.

Moslem students and parents, as well as others of other races and religions also support a heterosexual lifestyle. The stated mission of the Marshall School District is, in part, “to support all learners.”

The Supreme Court has approved an “Opt-Out Law” for Minnesota which states, “Every school district shall have a procedure for a parent (guardian) to review the content of instructional material to be provided to a child, and if the parent (guardian) objects to the content, to make arrangements for alternative instruction” (Parent Resource Guide, 2018, Minnesota Family Council).

The Supreme Court also recognizes that “parents have a fundamental right to control the upbringing and education of their children.”

So please, keep supporting our students, but stop using LGBTQ+ symbols and transgender-themed books and curriculum in our public school classrooms without giving parents the right to have their child opted out of these instructional materials. I address this request to the administration of our Marshall Public Schools.
